By far the most desired and arguably the most beautiful tone wood for ukuleles is the wood from the endemic Hawaiian Koa tree, Acacia koa. Found growing only in Hawaii, there are healthy stands growing in many areas of Hawaii's protected upland forests. What is harvested tends to come from private tracts with replanting performed at the time of harvest. Downed trees are also taken.
Koa is a highly variable wood ranging from blond and plain to highly "curly" with incredibly beautiful multi-hued deep reddish grain. Koa also make a very bright and "alive" sounding uke tone and is usually the first choice among Hawaiian ukulele professionals. Check out ukes.com for our amazing selection of Hawaiian made Koa ukes.
